Fabric not feeding Make sure if your machine has a drop-feed setting that it has not been activated, and that you don't have an embroidery or darning plate covering the feed dogs. A build-up of fuzz and lint can make it tough for your machine's mechanisms to work correctly. 9. Needle comes unthreaded before sewing How annoying. You just spent ages getting that thread through the eye of the needle, and as soon as you go to start sewing, it unthreads itself. Luckily, there's an easy fix for this one. Before threading your machine, just make sure that the needle is at its highest point. You can do this by winding the handwheel toward yourself (always wind it toward yourself since this advances the machine—winding it backward can cause threads to tangle) while watching the needle. This is caused by backstitching (or back-tacking) over the ends of the fabric, which changes the tensions your sewing machine experiences and causes tangles. Avoid this by sewing an extra few millimetres into your fabric before backstitching at the start of seams, so that the backstitches are all made through fabric and not over the edge. There are several possible reasons for uneven feed, and the culprit, not surprisingly, is usually the feed dogs. If your machine is older, it's possible the feed dogs may have worn down enough that they aren't catching the fabric evenly. If neither of these seems to be the issue, try increasing the pressure of your presser foot to make sure your fabric maintains even contact with the feed dogs. 14. It's likely that your machine just needs a good cleaning, so check through your manual for the recommended maintenance procedure.

Seams are puckered and distorted While a bit of unevenness in a seam can be dealt with by pressing, puckered and distorted seams may actually be a problem with your machine. The wood handle Russ describes looks almost like a shim. You push it as far as it will go (shouldn’t be hard to push) it moves a lip holding the machine in. If you can move the machine single-handed then you can wiggle it and release the other side. Once free it can be lifted out. We read a number of owner reviews from people who learned on a parent’s or grandparent’s quality machine and were disappointed when they bought a really low-end new machine. The one you learn on is usually the standard by which you judge other machines. Others do a one-step buttonhole (sewn in one step). Good light: Older models often come with halogen lights, whereas newer models often have LED lights. Either way, the light should be bright enough to illuminate your sewing surface. Built-in needle threader: We looked for a mechanism that threads the needle for you so that you don’t have to eyeball it. This feature is especially good for people with poor eyesight.

Adjustable needle feature: This allows you to move the needle off-center to the left or right while straight stitching, which is great for edge stitching. Most of the basic machines we discuss here don’t have this feature. Adjustable presser-foot pressure: The machine allows you to adjust the pressure of the presser foot to make it easier to sew a variety of fabrics. Adjustable feed dog height: The feed dogs are small metal teeth, just below the needle, that help pull the fabric across the sewing surface. If you can adjust the height of the feed dogs, you can more easily sew a variety of fabrics (see How a sewing machine works for more on how feed dogs function). Although all of these machines have what is called a limited 25-year warranty, it is usually not all that helpful. “As for the 25-year warranty, that will never come into play,” Harvey Federman told us. “That is on the head, which is essentially the frame.
